Indigenous Music Festival Returns to Saanich with Award-Winning Artists

The District of Saanich will host its sixth annual Indigenous Music Festival on Saturday, July 25, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Hampton Park (224 Hampton Rd., Saanich, BC V8Z). The event is free and open to the public.

The festival marks a notable shift for the community event. For the first time, the program will include award‑winning Indigenous performers who are based outside Vancouver Island. The change expands the festival’s reach beyond the island’s borders and highlights the growing national profile of Indigenous music.

The lineup features several high‑profile acts. Internationally acclaimed group The Spiritual Warriors will perform a blend of Indigenous chants with contemporary roots, rock, and reggae. The band has been described as a unique fusion of traditional drumming and modern musical styles. Ancestors, whose debut album was released in 2019, earned four nominations at the Native American Music Awards and won the award for best world recording. The group’s music incorporates Native American flute and percussion.

James Vickers Band, a standout in Canada’s West Coast blues and roots scene, will also appear. The band, led by 16‑year‑old frontman James Vickers, has been recognized for its high‑energy performances and guitar‑driven sound. Local Victoria band OTS, known for covering hits from the 1960s and 1970s, will provide a nostalgic contrast to the contemporary acts.

In addition to the musical performances, the festival will feature an Indigenous market and a selection of food vendors. The market will showcase crafts, artwork, and cultural items produced by local Indigenous artisans. Food stalls will offer a variety of dishes that reflect the culinary traditions of the region.

The event is part of Saanich’s broader community programming and is listed on the district’s official events calendar. The festival’s free admission and diverse lineup aim to celebrate Indigenous culture while engaging residents and visitors from across Vancouver Island and beyond. The District of Saanich has confirmed that the event will run for one day, with no additional performances scheduled after 8:00 p.m.

Attendees can expect a mix of traditional and contemporary music, cultural displays, and community engagement. The festival’s schedule, artist details, and venue information are available on the district’s website and on event‑listing platforms such as Allevents and HappeningNext.

The Indigenous Music Festival’s return to Hampton Park underscores the district’s commitment to supporting Indigenous artists and cultural expression. The inclusion of award‑winning performers from outside the island signals an expansion of the festival’s scope and a continued focus on showcasing the breadth of Indigenous talent in Canada.
