American Singer-Songwriter Oliver Tree Dies in Helicopter Collision Over Rio de Janeiro

On the morning of Sunday, 14 June 2026, the music world was shaken when Oliver Tree, the American singer‑songwriter, was killed in a mid‑air collision over Rio de Janeiro’s western zone. Two helicopters, operating near the electric‑vehicle dealership in Recreio dos Bandeirantes, struck each other above the parking lot. Six people died, including Tree, pilot Alexandre Souza, producer Lucas Brito Chaves, director Lucas Vignale, YouTuber Gaspi, and the second helicopter’s pilot. The impact set the dealership’s parking lot ablaze, a fire that was later extinguished by the military fire department.

Tree’s career began in 2010, when he was 17 and working within the electronic‑dance‑music scene. He collaborated with acts such as Skrillex and Zeds Dead, and in 2013 released a self‑titled EP. After a brief hiatus to study music technology at the California Institute of the Arts, he returned to recording in 2016. A viral single, “When I’m Down,” propelled him to a deal with Atlantic Records in 2017. His debut studio album, Ugly Is Beautiful, dropped in July 2020 and earned a gold certification. Subsequent releases included Cowboy Tears (February 2022), Alone in a Crowd (September 2023), and Love You Madly Hate You Badly (April 2026), the latter being his fourth and final studio album.

At the time of the crash, Tree was preparing to launch a world tour that would cover North America, Europe, Australia, and China. The tour was slated to begin in late 2026, following the promotion of his latest album. No official statement has yet been issued by his management or Atlantic Records.

The collision was first reported by local authorities and confirmed by the Rio de Janeiro military fire department. Investigators are combing through flight logs, pilot reports, and air‑traffic data to determine whether mechanical failure, pilot error, or external factors contributed to the accident. The Brazilian Air Force has said that an investigation will be carried out in accordance with national aviation regulations, involving the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) and the Brazilian Ministry of Defence.

The incident has cast a spotlight on aviation safety in Brazil, where helicopter traffic is common for business and media transport. The investigation’s findings could prompt a review of operational protocols for the country’s frequent use of rotary‑wing aircraft.

Tree’s death has prompted tributes from fellow musicians and fans alike. While no official press release has been issued, the music community has highlighted his influence on the EDM genre and his distinctive visual style. His catalog remains available on streaming platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music, where his albums have charted in multiple countries.

As of now, all six victims have been identified and the cause of the collision remains undetermined. Authorities have requested cooperation from witnesses and have opened a formal inquiry. No further information about the flight plans or the helicopters’ registration numbers has been released publicly.

The music industry will lose a prolific artist whose career spanned over a decade and whose recent work continued to push genre boundaries. The world will await the outcome of the investigation and the potential impact on aviation regulations in Brazil.
