Taylor Swift Returns to Her Country Roots With Emotional ‘Toy Story 5’ Ballad ‘I Knew It, I Knew You’

Taylor Swift is heading back to where her career began.

The global superstar has released "I Knew It, I Knew You," an original song written for Disney and Pixar's highly anticipated Toy Story 5, and early reactions suggest the track may be one of her most acclaimed releases in years. Critics have praised the song's emotional storytelling, country influences, and heartfelt connection to one of Pixar's most beloved characters: Jessie the cowgirl.

The song marks Swift's first major return to a distinctly country-inspired sound in years. While she has explored pop, indie folk, alternative, and synth-driven styles throughout much of the past decade, "I Knew It, I Knew You" embraces the narrative-driven songwriting that helped make her one of the biggest artists in the world.

According to Swift, the opportunity was deeply personal.

Announcing the song earlier this week, she explained that she has loved the Toy Story franchise since childhood and immediately felt inspired after seeing an early screening of the film. "I've always dreamed of getting to write for these characters," Swift said while revealing the project.

The track centers on Jessie, the spirited cowgirl introduced in Toy Story 2, whose emotional backstory remains one of the most memorable moments in Pixar history. Critics have described Swift's song as a companion piece to Randy Newman's beloved "When She Loved Me," revisiting themes of memory, friendship, growing up, and reunion through Jessie's perspective.

Produced and co-written with longtime collaborator Jack Antonoff, "I Knew It, I Knew You" blends acoustic instrumentation, warm melodies, and reflective lyrics that many listeners are already comparing to Swift's earlier country-era work. The release has drawn praise from both longtime Swift fans and music critics, with some calling it her strongest songwriting in years.

The timing is significant for Swift's career. The song arrives following the release of her 2025 album The Life of a Showgirl and follows a period in which much of her music leaned toward polished pop production. By contrast, "I Knew It, I Knew You" places storytelling front and center, allowing Swift to showcase the narrative strengths that first made her famous in Nashville nearly two decades ago.

The project also continues Swift's long history of contributing original songs to film soundtracks. Previous soundtrack highlights include "Safe & Sound" from The Hunger Games, "Eyes Open," "Carolina" from Where the Crawdads Sing, and "I Don't Wanna Live Forever" from Fifty Shades Darker.

Disney and Pixar officially confirmed Swift's involvement earlier this week, describing the song as an original composition created specifically for the film. The announcement immediately fueled excitement among both Swifties and Pixar fans, many of whom have waited years to see the singer collaborate with one of animation's most successful franchises.

Toy Story 5 is scheduled to arrive in theaters on June 19 and will reunite audiences with Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Jessie, and the rest of the beloved toy gang. The film explores the challenges toys face in an increasingly digital world where children spend more time with screens than traditional playthings.

For Swift, the project represents something of a full-circle moment. She has spoken openly about growing up with the Toy Story films and credits them as part of her childhood. Now, one of the world's most successful songwriters has become part of that legacy herself.

Whether listeners view "I Knew It, I Knew You" as a soundtrack song, a return to country music, or simply another chapter in Swift's ever-evolving career, the early response suggests the track has struck an emotional chord. And for many fans, hearing Taylor Swift tell a story through a country-inspired ballad once again feels a little like coming home.
