NPR Tiny Desk Announces Star-Studded Black Music Month 2026 Concert Series
NPR Music and Tiny Desk have announced a month-long Black Music Month 2026 concert series featuring a diverse lineup of artists spanning multiple generations and genres, continuing a tradition that has become one of the signature annual events for the acclaimed live music platform.
Beginning June 2, audiences can look forward to performances from GENA, Kareem Riggins and Liv.e, Ayra Starr, Joe, The Paradox, Floetry, Fred Hammond, Eve, 8Ball & MJG, Shaboozey, and Bow Wow. The concerts will be released throughout June on the popular NPR Music YouTube channel, home to the globally recognized Tiny Desk series that has attracted millions of viewers through its intimate live performances.
The series is already underway, with Floetry's Tiny Desk Concert premiering on June 2 as part of this year's Black Music Month programming. The performance reunites the influential neo-soul duo in the intimate office setting that has become synonymous with the Tiny Desk brand, offering fans a fresh live showcase from one of the most celebrated acts in modern R&B.
The 2026 celebration marks the fifth consecutive year that Tiny Desk has dedicated special programming to Black Music Month, highlighting the influence and enduring impact of Black artists across American and global music culture. Fans interested in exploring the series' extensive catalog can browse the official Tiny Desk Concert playlist, which features hundreds of performances from some of the most respected artists in music.
To help unveil this year's lineup, BET legends Donnie Simpson, Big Tigger, and Bow Wow joined NPR across social media platforms, underscoring the connection between Tiny Desk and the longstanding legacy of Black music programming on television.
"Back in the music video age of the 1980s, when other networks refused to feature Black artists, Black Entertainment Television was born, quickly becoming a standard bearer for American culture," said Bobby Carter, host and series producer for NPR's Tiny Desk. "Tiny Desk, like many other platforms, stands on the shoulders of BET programs such as Video Soul, Rap City, and 106 & Park. To celebrate Black Music Month 2026 and the undeniable legacy of BET, Tiny Desk brings you 10 shows that reflect the essence of Black music."
Carter's comments highlight the historical significance of BET's role in providing visibility to Black artists during a period when mainstream music television often failed to do so. Programs such as Video Soul, Rap City, and 106 & Park became cultural institutions, helping launch careers, introduce emerging artists, and shape generations of music fans.
BET President Louis Carr echoed that sentiment while reflecting on the network's decades-long commitment to Black artistry and entertainment.
"For more than 40 years, BET has been the home where Black music and Black artistry are celebrated without compromise," Carr said. "From Video Soul to Rap City to 106 & Park, we built the stages that introduced the world to generations of talent. To see Tiny Desk honor that legacy during Black Music Month is a profound recognition of the culture we've championed since day one — and a reminder that the work of elevating Black music continues."
Throughout June, NPR Music plans to supplement the performances with behind-the-scenes content, artist features, and social media programming designed to provide additional context around the featured artists and the broader significance of Black Music Month. The lineup spans R&B, hip-hop, gospel, soul, Afrobeats, country, and contemporary pop influences, reflecting the enormous reach of Black music across today's cultural landscape.
Since its launch, Tiny Desk has evolved from a niche office concert concept into one of the most influential live music platforms in the world. The series has become known for showcasing artists in stripped-down environments that emphasize musicianship, storytelling, and live performance, often producing memorable moments that generate millions of views long after their initial release.
As Black Music Month 2026 gets underway, the latest Tiny Desk lineup serves as both a celebration of established legends and a spotlight on emerging voices. With artists representing multiple eras and genres, the month-long series reinforces the vital role Black musicians continue to play in shaping the sound, direction, and future of popular music.
