This Day in Music History — May 23

Some dates quietly pass through music history.

May 23 is not one of them.

Over the decades, the date has delivered landmark album releases, iconic photographs, chart-topping moments, and pivotal career events that helped shape rock, hip-hop, and popular music culture. From grunge imagery to one of the fastest-selling albums in history, May 23 has built an unusually stacked resume.

One of the biggest entries arrived in 2000 when Eminem released The Marshall Mathers LP. The record became a cultural earthquake, launching at No. 1 and eventually becoming one of the fastest-selling albums ever released in the United States. The album pushed Eminem into another level of superstardom and permanently altered the trajectory of mainstream hip-hop.

Jump back several decades and May 23 also marks a key moment in rock history. In 1969, The Who released Tommy in the U.K., introducing one of rock's earliest and most influential concept albums. The ambitious rock opera helped expand ideas surrounding what albums themselves could become.

In 1960, The Everly Brothers launched a massive chart run with Cathy's Clown. The song quickly became one of the duo's defining hits and dominated charts on both sides of the Atlantic.

May 23 also accidentally became part of grunge history.

In 1991, photographer Michael Lavine shot the now-famous cover image for Nirvana's Nevermind. The image of a baby underwater chasing a dollar bill eventually became one of the most recognizable album covers ever created. At the time, few could have predicted it would become a permanent symbol of an era.

Other notable May 23 moments include:

• 1970 — Paul McCartney reached No. 1 with his debut solo album McCartney.

• 2000 — A Perfect Circle released their debut album Mer de Noms.

• 2009 — Green Day topped charts with 21st Century Breakdown.

• 2019 — Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber hit No. 1 with I Don't Care.

Music history rarely unfolds in neat patterns. But occasionally a date starts collecting milestones across generations.

May 23 appears to be one of those dates.
