We all know famous singer-songwriter and actress Olivia Rodrigo from the hit TV show High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, after her song “All I Want” took the world by storm. This heartbreaking song is about her desire to find the perfect guy, and her struggle to accept that she has herself and that should be enough. Rodrigo said, “I wrote it for a show I act in and it was a super cool experience that opened up a lot of doors for me.” This song later prompted the release of her song “Driver’s License,” which was also went viral with the help of TikTok.
Rodrigo then dropped her album “Sour” which also spread like wildfire. Her album is about her ex-boyfriend, Joshua Bassett. Basset is co-star on the show and thus, her love interest. What is most astonishing about this album is that listeners would never know that Rodrigo is merely 18 years old. Her lyrics display true heartbreak and pain that most 18 year olds have not even come close to experiencing. Her song “good 4 u” was a hit (also circulated on Tik Tok) about Bassett and how he moved on to a new girl. The eleven songs in her album all share one general theme – heartbreak. My personal favorite, “traitor” is about how her ex was “talking” to another girl while they were together, and started dating her shortly after they broke up. Her lyrics are very detailed and specific, which helps listeners relate to her music even more.
Rodrigo went on to win the iHeartRadio Music Social Star Award and Billboard posted that she will “likely to do very well in the nominations for the 64th annual Grammy Awards, which are expected to be announced in November.”
