Universal Pictures Sets August 2027 Release for Snoop Dogg Biopic "Snoop"

Universal Pictures announced that its upcoming biopic of rapper Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., better known as Snoop Dogg, will open in theaters on August 6 2027. The film, titled Snoop, is slated for a wide release and is described by the studio as the “definitive biopic of the artist, mogul and icon of gangsta rap.”

The movie will follow Snoop Dogg’s life from his upbringing in Long Beach, California, through his breakthrough with Dr. Dre on the 1992 single “Deep Cover” and the 1993 album Doggystyle, to his later ventures in television, film, and business. Actor Jonathan Daviss, known for his role in the Netflix series Outer Banks, has been cast to portray the rapper. The project is directed by Craig Brewer, who previously directed music‑driven films such as Hustle & Flow and Dolemite Is My Name.

The biopic is part of the first film under Death Row Pictures’ overall deal with NBCUniversal. Universal said the film will carry an R rating and will explore both personal and professional milestones, though specific plot details remain undisclosed. No trailer has yet been released, and the cast list beyond Daviss is still being finalized.

Snoop Dogg’s career has spanned more than three decades, during which he has sold over 35 million records worldwide and expanded into acting, television hosting, and entrepreneurship. His influence on West Coast hip‑hop, especially the G‑funk style he helped popularize in the early 1990s, has made him a frequent subject of music‑industry retrospectives. The biopic follows a growing trend of Hollywood productions that chronicle the lives of iconic musicians, a genre that has seen recent successes such as Straight Outta Compton.

Universal’s announcement came during a presentation at CinemaCon, where the studio highlighted the film’s place in its slate for summer 2027. The release date positions Snoop alongside other family‑friendly and action titles, including Disney’s The Bluey Movie and Black Bear’s Jason Statham Stole My Bike. The studio has not yet confirmed whether the film will be released in 3D or on any streaming platform.

At present, the only confirmed details are the release date, the lead actor, the director, and the studio’s description of the film’s scope. Production is ongoing, and additional cast members, a marketing campaign, and a promotional trailer are expected to be announced in the coming months.

In summary, Universal Pictures has set a firm release window for its Snoop Dogg biopic, with Jonathan Daviss as the lead and Craig Brewer at the helm. The film’s focus on the rapper’s early years, musical ascent, and business ventures reflects the broader industry interest in music biographies. Fans and industry observers will likely watch for further updates as the project moves closer to its August 2027 debut.
