Social Distortion Releases Tonight Video to Promote 15-Year-Old Album Born To Kill

When the Tulsa skyline glows under a late‑afternoon haze, the band that has shaped generations of punk finds a new way to tell a story. Social Distortion’s latest clip for “Tonight,” a standout from their eighth studio effort Born To Kill, premiered today, offering a fresh visual chapter for a record that finally hit shelves on May 8 2026.

The video, directed by Tulsa‑based filmmaker John Swab, was shot on location in the city’s iconic neighborhoods. It weaves Mike Ness’s raw performance with a tender narrative that follows his son, Johnny Angel Rios‑Ness. The storyline draws directly from Ness’s enduring marriage to Christine, to whom the song is dedicated, and brings the Ness family’s second generation into the frame. By juxtaposing the frontman’s gritty vocal delivery with a quieter, more personal storyline, the clip underscores the intimate themes that run through the album.

Born To Kill marks the band’s return after a 15‑year hiatus, the longest gap in Social Distortion’s history. Released through Epitaph Records, the record follows the 2011 release Hard Times And Nursery Rhymes and reintroduces drummer David Hidalgo Jr. as a full studio member—a first after touring with the group. The album’s sound blends the punk edge the band is known for with rockabilly and roots‑rock flourishes, but “Tonight” itself departs from that palette, slowing into a reflective rock ballad that highlights the personal narrative.

Co‑produced by Mike Ness and Dave Sardy, Born To Kill features guest contributions from Benmont Tench of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers and Lucinda Williams. The cover artwork is a collaboration between Ness and renowned artist Shepard Fairey, marrying the band’s gritty aesthetic with Fairey’s iconic visual style. The track list—spanning titles such as “No Way Out,” “The Way Things Were,” “Partners In Crime,” and the title track “Born To Kill”—offers a mix of hard‑hitting riffs and more contemplative moments.

The album’s development was anything but straightforward. Recording began shortly after Hard Times And Nursery Rhymes hit the market, but progress stalled in 2023 when Ness revealed a stage‑one tonsil cancer diagnosis. Following his recovery, the band resumed work in 2024 and 2025, issuing the lead single “Born To Kill” in February 2026 before releasing the full album in May. The two‑year recording window and health setback added layers of urgency to the project’s completion.

Critics have responded favorably to the new material. Born To Kill holds a Metacritic score of 72, based on a selection of published reviews that praise the band’s ability to revisit familiar influences while delivering fresh content that acknowledges its legacy.

Social Distortion is keeping the momentum alive with a North American tour that will see them share stages with The Descendents and Australia’s The Chats. The “Tonight” video provides an additional promotional push, spotlighting the album’s most personal track as the touring cycle ramps up.

By pairing a new visual narrative with a decades‑old album, Social Distortion reaffirms its relevance in the contemporary punk scene. The video’s release underscores the band’s continued effort to reconnect with listeners after a long hiatus, while also highlighting the deeply personal themes that have shaped the new material. With the album’s launch and the tour underway, the group remains a prominent voice in modern punk, proving that even after fifteen years, the music—and the stories behind it—continue to resonate.
