Beloit Celebrates 250th Independence Day with Pops on the Rock Concert, Fireworks, and Family Fun

On Saturday, July 4, 2026, Riverside Park in Beloit, Wisconsin, hosted the city’s annual Independence Day celebration, "Pops on the Rock," featuring a performance by the Beloit‑Janesville Symphony Orchestra (BJSO), a fireworks display, and a range of family‑friendly activities.

The BJSO, a semi‑professional orchestra that has served the Beloit‑Janesville area for decades, performed under the direction of guest conductor Benjamin Skroch. The program included patriotic selections such as the Armed Forces Medley, which honored the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard, as well as lively renditions of popular movie themes, including music from "Pirates of the Caribbean." The orchestra’s long‑time member Dave Muray, who has been with the BJSO since 1969, took a brief break before joining the performance.

"I’ve been with them since 1969," Muray told reporters. "I am the second longest serving member." The BJSO, originally known as the Beloit Civic Symphony and briefly renamed the Rock River Philharmonic from 2014 to 2016, has a history of community engagement and seasonal performances.

The event was part of the city’s celebration of the nation’s 250th anniversary of independence. The City of Beloit, in partnership with local sponsors, organized an extended fireworks display that began after sunset. Attendees could view the fireworks from Riverside Park or across the Rock River at the Beloit Memorial High School football field.

Families and visitors also enjoyed a variety of food trucks offering Mexican cuisine. Vendors included Fernando’s Tacos and BBQ, Venero’s Tacos, Los Alacranes, and Coco’s Tamales. The Beloit Parks and Recreation Department provided yard games for children, such as a giant Jenga tower, a small trampoline, and the Turtle Island play area, where kids could climb tree towers or splash through a stream.

"Some came for the music. Others came for the food and yard games. Still others came for the fireworks," said a city spokesperson. "It was a full day of community celebration." The event drew families from across the region, including the Ciamaga family. Little Teddy Ciamaga, who was eating baby carrots while the orchestra tuned, was attending his second July 4 celebration at Riverside Park. "Last year he made it through about half of the fireworks, then it was bedtime for him," Paul Ciamaga said. "We’ll see how he does this year." Hailey Ciamaga added that growing up in Beloit, the Fourth of July celebration at Riverside Park is a family tradition.

The BJSO’s Pops on the Rock concert has become a staple of Beloit’s summer calendar, drawing audiences each year to celebrate American heritage with music, fireworks, and community spirit. The 2026 edition continued the tradition, offering a blend of classical and popular music that appealed to a broad audience.

The City of Beloit’s partnership with the BJSO and local vendors highlights the role of regional arts organizations in fostering civic pride and economic activity. The event also underscored the importance of public spaces, such as Riverside Park, in hosting large community gatherings.

As the fireworks ended, the crowd dispersed, many taking photos and sharing the experience on social media. The city’s official event page noted that the celebration was a success, with positive feedback from attendees and local businesses.

The BJSO will continue its seasonal schedule, with upcoming concerts planned for the fall. The city will review the event’s impact and plan for next year’s celebration, ensuring that Pops on the Rock remains a key part of Beloit’s cultural calendar.
