Yangon Region Music Association Launches First Singing Contest on Myanmar Music Day

On 27 June, Yangon Region Music Association (YRMA) marked Myanmar Music Day with its first ever singing contest, a national tribute to the 1936 adoption of the “Dobama” song as the country’s anthem. The event unfolded at Dolphin Hall in Bahan Township, Yangon, and wrapped up with a winners’ ceremony that also honored senior musicians in a Respect‑Paying Ceremony.

A total of 114 singers from 25 townships across the Yangon Region entered the competition. After a series of preliminary rounds, 28 artists advanced to the final stage, where five were crowned the top winners. YRMA Chairman Ko Latt explained that the contest was part of a broader effort to strengthen the music industry through newly formed township and regional associations. He said hosting the event was a first for the organization and hoped it would reinforce national unity and friendship.

Among the finalists was Phway Phway of Thaketa Township. She told reporters that she had given her best effort and was proud to receive an award for her township. She added that the day was an honour, allowing her to meet elder musicians, and that she intended to keep showcasing her talents to audiences.

The Respect‑Paying Ceremony saw 158 senior musicians receive cash assistance and other items. Musician Than Tun Lay, invited by the Myanmar Music Association (Central), reflected on how opportunities for young singers have expanded compared to his own youth.

Financial backing for the day was substantial. President U Min Aung Hlaing and his wife donated 10 million kyats to the Myanmar Music Association (Central). The Ministry of Information, the Yangon Region Government, and other donors added further contributions, bringing the total amount donated to more than 31 million kyats.

Myanmar Music Day is observed annually on 27 June, the anniversary of the second Dobama Asiayon Conference in Myingyan where the “Dobama” song was adopted as the national anthem. The Myanmar Music Association officially designated the date in 2013 to preserve the nation’s musical heritage and the spirit of nationalism.

The YRMA’s inaugural contest signals a new chapter in the region’s music scene. By engaging participants from across Yangon and providing a platform for emerging talent, the association aims to foster a more vibrant local industry. The substantial donations and the participation of senior musicians underscore the event’s role as a bridge between generations.

As the ceremony concluded, the winners received trophies, and the association announced plans to continue supporting music education and competition in future years. No further details have been released regarding additional events or follow‑up initiatives.

The event highlights growing institutional support for music in Myanmar, blending cultural celebration with tangible financial aid to sustain both emerging and veteran artists.
