Jacksonvilles Riverfront Music Garden Debuts A Cappella, an Interactive Public Art Installation Built on the Citys Musical Legacy

On May 13 2026, Jacksonville’s Northbank Riverwalk welcomed a new cultural landmark—A Cappella, a permanent installation that turns the city’s musical legacy into an interactive landscape. Designed by Brooklyn‑based studio The Urban Conga, the work is carved into the riverbank in the shape of a musical note, flanking the St. Johns River and the Jacksonville Center for the Performing Arts.

A Cappella is built around 84 songs written by more than 60 local artists, spanning a full century of Jacksonville music from the 1920s to the 2020s. The installation is divided into four sections—motivation, home, love, and freedom—that mirror the movements of a symphony. Each section carries its own emotional register, guiding visitors through the city’s musical history in a dynamic, rather than static, experience.

The studio, led by Ryan Swanson and Maeghann Coleman, AIA, NOMA, has long championed the idea of a “playable city.” Their philosophy centers on open‑ended play and designing spaces that invite interaction and contribution. A Cappella embodies that approach by allowing the public to engage with the installation and by being designed to accommodate new artists over time.

Public engagement was a core part of the project. Residents identified the songs and lyrics that would form the installation’s architecture before any panels were installed, ensuring that the work reflected the community’s own musical heritage rather than being imposed from outside.

The installation’s visual design uses dichroic and reflective panels that shift with changing light, meaning the appearance of the work varies throughout the day. The panels are arranged to echo the rhythm and tempo of the songs they represent, creating a dynamic experience that rewards repeat visits.

A Cappella is part of the larger Riverfront Music Garden, a public park that opened on the Northbank Riverwalk in May 2026. The garden includes interactive art installations, a Walk of Fame honoring musicians with ties to Jacksonville, children’s musical playscapes, and an outdoor projection venue. The Riverfront Music Garden sits behind the former Jacksonville Landing site and is adjacent to the first phase of Riverfront Plaza.

The installation’s unfinished design is intentional. Rather than becoming background noise after its unveiling, A Cappella is meant to evolve. The structure can incorporate new songs as Jacksonville’s music scene continues to grow, ensuring that the work remains relevant and reflective of the city’s ongoing cultural output.

The ribbon‑cutting ceremony on May 13 2026 was attended by city officials, representatives from The Urban Conga, and local musicians. The event highlighted the city’s commitment to preserving its sonic history alongside its built environment.

A Cappella demonstrates how public art can serve as a living archive of community culture. By embedding the city’s musical heritage into the riverfront landscape and allowing it to grow, the installation offers a model for how cities can honor their artistic past while remaining open to future contributions.

The project is expected to remain a dynamic feature of the Riverfront Music Garden, with the possibility of adding new musical elements as Jacksonville’s artists continue to create.
