Jhene Aiko Announces Release Date for New Album Westside Whimsy
After a six‑year pause, Jhené Aiko has announced the launch date for her next studio project, Westside Whimsy. On Tuesday, September 8, the Grammy‑nominated R&B singer posted the album’s cover, a full tracklist, and a short note of thanks on Instagram, setting the Friday, September 11, 2026 release.
The 20‑track LP, issued through Def Jam, features collaborations with West Coast artists Ab‑Soul, Tyga, Larry June, OHMA, and a guest verse from Kendrick Lamar. The cover image was taken by Danny Williams, better known in the music community as “Topshelf Junior.” Aiko’s caption read, “6 years in the making 💙 Thank you for your patience 🙏🏼 ‘Westside Whimsy’ out THIS FRIDAY ✨,” and the accompanying post included the complete tracklist.
Westside Whimsy follows Aiko’s 2020 album Chilombo, which peaked at number two on the Billboard 200 and earned her three Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year. The six‑year interval between releases is the longest in her catalog; her earlier projects—Souled Out (2014), Trip (2017) and the Sail Out EP (2013)—each received critical acclaim and commercial success. The upcoming LP therefore marks a significant return to the studio for the artist.
In a recent interview with Complex, Aiko explained that the album’s sound is rooted in the music she grew up listening to. She said, “I think that everything I do is rooted in where I'm from, what I grew up around, the people that I love, and the music I grew up listening to, which was a lot of ‘90s rap, and R&B, and soul and even just all the music in the ‘90s has really influenced me.” The tracklist reflects this blend of influences, with several songs featuring classic hip‑hop production and soulful vocal arrangements.
Aiko has been promoting the album since she first revealed the title in January via Instagram Stories. She also partnered with Erewhon Market earlier this year to launch a smoothie called “The Westside Whimsy,” tying the album’s aesthetic to a lifestyle product. The September 8 Instagram announcement included a preview of the album cover and a link to the full tracklist, signaling a coordinated rollout across social media and streaming platforms.
With the release date set for September 11, industry observers will track Westside Whimsy’s performance on streaming charts and assess how the collaborations with high‑profile West Coast artists shape its reception. Aiko’s return after a six‑year hiatus, coupled with the strategic marketing push, positions the album as a notable event in the 2026 R&B and hip‑hop landscape.
