South Korea Launches 2026 Popular Music Practical Masterclass to Train Industry Talent
South Korea is turning up the volume on music education with the launch of the 2026 Popular Music Practical Masterclass, a 10‑day intensive training followed by a five‑month paid internship that will welcome 40 newcomers into the Korean music scene.
Scheduled from July 10 to July 20, the program is hosted by the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA) and run in partnership with the Korea Independent Label Association (LIAK). The curriculum delivers 60 lectures that map the entire popular‑music ecosystem—from industry fundamentals and artist management to A&R, performance production, digital distribution, IP and album stewardship, public relations, viral marketing, global promotion, overseas networking, AI‑driven content creation, copyright, contracts, settlement practices, portfolio development, and a live‑club‑day observation.
Beyond classroom theory, trainees receive hands‑on mentoring, portfolio‑production support, field learning, and networking sessions. KOCCA will equip every participant with a laptop to facilitate the coursework.
After the intensive block, each trainee is matched with one of more than 60 LIAK‑member companies—including leading labels, distributors, and performance‑production firms—for a five‑month internship. The internship pays the 2026 minimum wage and covers the four major social insurances. Upon completion, participants earn a certificate; outstanding performers may receive awards and formal employment linkage offers.
In an official statement, Ministry officials said, “This is a course where participants can learn the overall popular music business, from A&R and distribution to performances, marketing, and global expansion, all at once, while gaining experience at actual companies.” They added that they hope for strong interest from applicants preparing for employment in the music industry.
Applications remain open until July 20 and can be submitted through the “Popular Music Practical Masterclass” KakaoTalk channel or the Plus Friend platform.
The initiative reflects South Korea’s growing emphasis on practical, industry‑aligned training. By pairing classroom learning with real‑world internships, the Ministry and KOCCA aim to close the skill gap that independent labels cite as a barrier to rapid growth. The program also aligns with KOCCA’s broader mandate to support cultural content export and to provide financial and logistical assistance to small‑to‑medium enterprises in the creative industries.
In short, the 2026 Popular Music Practical Masterclass offers a structured, paid pathway for newcomers to enter the Korean music industry, combining intensive training, on‑the‑job experience, and potential employment opportunities into a single, comprehensive program.
