Roland Corporation Opens First U.S. Flagship Store in Manhattans Meatpacking District

When a drum machine that once sparked the beats of Michael Jackson and hip‑hop legends finally takes root in New York City, the city’s own music scene is poised for a revival.

Roland Corporation, the Japanese manufacturer behind the legendary TR‑808 drum machine that powered tracks like "Beat It," has signed a lease for a 7,519‑square‑foot flagship retail space at 414 West 14th Street in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District. The store is slated to open on September 1, 2026. The move, brokered by Bona Bernard of Midtown Commercial Real Estate, is part of an effort to breathe new life into the spirit of New York’s historic Music Row, a district that once thrived on 48th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues.

Founded in Osaka in 1972 by Ikutaro Kakehashi and relocated to Hamamatsu in 2005, Roland has produced a range of influential electronic instruments—including the Juno‑106 synthesizer, the TB‑303 bass synthesizer, and the TR‑808 and TR‑909 drum machines. The TR‑808, manufactured between 1980 and 1983, was a commercial flop at first but later became a cornerstone of hip‑hop, dance, and pop music, its distinctive bass drum and snare heard on songs such as "Planet Rock" and "Sexual Healing."

The new flagship will occupy a former warehouse on West 14th Street that has been renovated into a showroom, demo area, and retail counter. Roland’s U.S. representative announced the lease, while broker Bona Bernard highlighted the store’s potential to become a destination for musicians, producers, and technology enthusiasts. The location sits near the Hudson River and is within walking distance of the Gansevoort Square redevelopment, which includes mixed‑income housing and new ground‑floor retail.

Opening a flagship in the United States follows a broader trend of music‑technology companies establishing experiential retail locations. Roland’s first U.S. flagship will be the company’s largest retail presence outside Japan and is expected to showcase its full product line—from keyboards and synthesizers to drum machines and audio processors. By situating the flagship in the Meatpacking District, Roland aims to rekindle the collaborative atmosphere that once defined New York’s music scene.

Industry observers note that the flagship could stimulate local music‑related businesses and attract visitors to the Meatpacking District. The store’s opening date of September 1, 2026, aligns with the completion of several nearby development projects, potentially creating a new cultural hub. Roland’s presence may also encourage other international music‑technology brands to consider flagship locations in New York, further diversifying the city’s music‑industry footprint.

As of now, Roland has confirmed the lease and the store’s opening schedule. The company has not released a detailed floor plan or product lineup, but it has indicated that the flagship will feature interactive displays and live demonstrations. The Meatpacking District lease represents Roland’s first major retail expansion in the United States and is expected to open its doors to the public in September 2026.
