Welcomer Releases Debut Album Calendars and Launches Nationwide Tour
On 11 June, New Zealand indie outfit Welcomer unveiled its first studio effort, Calendars, through Papaiti Records. The ten‑track collection is now streaming on every major platform and available in vinyl, CD and cassette at participating record stores worldwide.
The release, announced on the band’s Facebook page and Bandcamp profile, marks a milestone for the group fronted by vocalist‑songwriter Miles Sutton, whose lyrical work is known for its emotional honesty and poetic nuance. Sutton’s earlier single, “Magazine Clipping,” which featured Aotearoa songwriter Lontalius, hinted at the storytelling focus that carries through Calendars.
Calendars weaves together themes of youth, transition and the quest for belonging. The opener, “Impossible,” starts with the line “Good things come to those who wait,” setting a narrative arc that spans wry humor and introspection. Tracks such as “Scam,” “Aisle” and “Rafters” blend clever wordplay with reflective lyricism, while “Crescents” veers into a noisier post‑rock terrain. The record nods to The Smiths in “Rafters,” yet deliberately skips the Papaiti tradition of a track titled “Home Again.”
Musically, the album balances gentle acoustic passages with layered instrumentation. S Sutton’s voice is anchored by drummer Eddie Crawshaw, guitarist Ox Lennon and bassist Shannen Georgia Petersen, creating a sound that feels both intimate and expansive. Producer Jesse Austin‑Stewart’s work adds depth to the arrangements without masking the lyrical content.
Papaiti Records confirmed that Calendars will be distributed globally through its established channels, and fans can purchase the vinyl LP at local record stores or download the album digitally. The band’s Bandcamp page offers a direct purchase option for those who prefer owning the physical product.
To celebrate the launch, Welcomer will head out on a New Zealand tour that starts on 12 June at Snails in Palmerston North and wraps up on 3 July in Wellington. The itinerary mixes headline shows with support acts: the opening night features Monty Hall’s Problem and Watercolour; the next day, Porridge Watson in Whanganui is joined by Pining Radiata. On 20 June, the band will play Space Academy in Christchurch, with Pickle Darling and Model Home as guests. A house show in Dunedin on 21 June will be an all‑ages event.
Further stops include Nicegoblins in Auckland on 27 June, where Fazed On A Pony and Yon Loader will support, and the final performance at Valhalla in Wellington on 3 July, with Belladonna and King Hit opening.
Tickets are sold through the UnderTheRadar (UTR) platform, and the band encourages fans to support UTR’s ongoing operations by purchasing tickets via the provided link.
Welcomer’s social media channels have highlighted the album’s themes and the upcoming tour dates. The official Facebook page lists the release and tour details, while the Bandcamp page offers direct purchase options. The UTR support link is included in the tour announcement, inviting fans to contribute to the platform that hosts the band’s live event information.
As of now, Calendars is fully distributed across streaming services, physical retailers and the band’s own online store. The tour schedule is confirmed, and tickets are on sale. Welcomer’s debut marks a significant entry into the New Zealand indie scene, underscoring a commitment to lyrical depth and a blend of acoustic and post‑rock textures.
