Gregg Allman Documentary Revisits Duane Allman Bond in Emotional New Trailer

A newly released trailer for Gregg Allman: Music of My Soul is giving fans a deeply personal look at one of Southern rock's most influential figures — while placing a major spotlight on the relationship that helped shape his life and music: his bond with his late brother, Duane Allman. The documentary explores Gregg's journey through fame, loss, addiction, and artistic legacy, while revisiting one of music's most tragic and defining family stories.

Directed by James Keach and co-produced alongside Gregg Allman's longtime manager Michael Lehman, the film aims to go beyond a standard career retrospective. Instead, the documentary appears focused on Gregg as a person — his early life, emotional struggles, and the experiences that fueled his songwriting and unmistakable voice.

Central to the story is Gregg's relationship with Duane Allman, co-founder of the The Allman Brothers Band and one of rock music's most revered guitar players. Duane's death in a 1971 motorcycle accident at just 24 years old devastated Gregg and forever altered the trajectory of both his personal life and musical career.

According to Keach, that brotherhood became one of the emotional anchors of the film. He explained that Gregg's story resonated deeply because of his own close relationship with his brother, making the themes of family and loss especially personal during production.

The trailer also suggests the film will examine Gregg's battles with addiction and the lasting impact grief had on his life. Producers say the documentary focuses on both the pain and joy embedded in Gregg's music — qualities that many fans believe made his songwriting so emotionally powerful.

Special premiere screenings are planned in both New York and Macon, Georgia, with appearances and performances tied to the extended Allman family legacy, including Devon Allman and Duane Betts.

For longtime fans, Music of My Soul appears positioned as more than a documentary.

It looks like a return to the heart of what made Gregg Allman resonate for decades: loss, family, survival, and the music left behind.
